Who knew that a discussion of classical music performer etiquette and expectations would turn into this lively and wonderful discussion about an old tradition?
I don’t know if I’d entrust every single ensemble (especially a younger ensemble) with not tuning on stage, but it can be quite effective. Professional musicians are the best of the best, and they should know the intonation tendencies of their instrument in all conditions. They don’t need a random A=440, especially when it sacrifices flow.
I expect some disagreement on this. I welcome it. (Anything for page views!)
