Theory Thursday

Pedagogical question this week: How many of you out there in Theoryland incorporate what the students are doing in lessons/ensembles on a regular basis? I’m always looking for ways to do that. I believe the more the students can do theory on their instruments/in their voices, the more likely they are to understand the concepts.

  1. At TTU, every year the orchestra and choirs would combine for a big scholarship concert. One year they did Mahler 2; one year they did Deutsches Requiem. We had them buy the scores for those and built our fourth-semester theory curriculum around them. The students were really engaged–they brought their scores to rehearsal, got to know parts that weren’t their own, brought them to performance. We did this with Handel’s Messiah one year, too (figuring everyone has to play/sing it at some point).
